ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A 20-year-old Rome man has died after being stabbed several times in the torso early Tuesday morning. A Brooklyn man is charged with his murder.

Rome Police Detective Tim Bates say Stephen M. LaPointe was walking with a group of friends near Lawrence Street around 3:45 Tuesday morning when a man riding a bicycle rode past. They exchanged words and LaPointe ended up in a fight with the man. Police say the suspect, 26-year-old Terrence Dames of Brooklyn then stabbed LaPointe numerous times in the torso. Dames then took off. Police were able to catch up with the suspect a couple of hours after the incident.

LaPointe underwent surgery at Rome Memorial Hospital this morning but passed away from his injuries Tuesday evening.

Dames is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Wednesday morning.
