(WKTV) - A 20-year-old Rome man was in stable condition Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while hunting near Boonville, New York State Police said.
Marc T. Donahue, 20, of Rome was hunting in a wooded area located off Furman Road in the town of Boonville when he attempted to attach his .308 rifle to a rope so he could hoist it up to a tree stand. The rope was about six feet off the ground and when Donahue reached up and began attaching the rifle to the rope, one round was discharged into his left femur.
The rifle was loaded with four rounds and did not have the safety on at the time of the accident.
Donahue was transported by Mercy Flight to Upstate Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.
State Police of Remsen investigated, with Boonville Fire Department and Ambulance assisted. The Department of Environmental Conservation responded.
