Rome man, others to restore tank outside American Legion

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A World War II tank that sits outside an American Legion in Rome will be restored -- thanks to a Rome man's efforts and the help of the community.

Chris Shaw with the Brotherhood of Tankers started raising money around Veteran's Day last year. Shaw raised about $5,000 and will get manpower, equipment, and fuel thanks to Rusty Williams and Rig All Equipment.

On Tuesday, the tank, which has sat in the spot for more than 30 years, will be moved inside and the work will begin.

"We're gonna strip it, sandblast it, replace any parts that need to be replaced, give her a nice fresh coat of paint and see if we can clean it up a little bit," Shaw said.

Shaw said he wanted the restoration to coincide with Memorial Day because it's also a tribute to veterans.
