Rome residents honored with community awards

(WKTV) - Two Rome residents received community awards Wednesday morning.

The Francis Bellamy Awards are given to outstanding citizens who exemplify the ideals of Bellamy, who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dennis Surace, a regional executive for NBT Bank and the Rev. Philip Hearn, pastor of St. Mary's and St. Peter's Catholic Church, were chosen for the generosity and positive influence on the community.

The committee issuing the awards also made a $1,000 donation to the Luis Marina Jr. Scholarship Fund.

"My husband and I are very grateful that you chose my deceased son, Luis Marina, to receive the award," said Mercedes Marina, the mother of Luis Marina Jr. "It's an honor, and we're very happy and delighted to receive it on his behalf."

The money was raised at the Francis J. Bellamy Community Awards Breakfast last year. This year's breakfast will be Aug. 28, and Surace and Hearn will receive their awards during the breakfast.
