SNL's Jim Breuer cracks jokes for a cause in Utica

By ANNA MEILER

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -- It was all laughs on Friday at Redeemer Church with Saturday Night Live's Jim Breuer.

"If anything, I like church venues the best because A, there's no heckling, B, they're there to support you. Even if you're doing terrible, they're not like 'Get off the stage,' they're like, 'You'll do better, God's with you, you'll be okay,'" said Breuer.

And it's comedy for a cause.

"We're having a new ministry launched at our church that's going to help kids that have Autism," said Michael Servello, a pastor at Redeemer Church.

All the proceeds will go towards refurnishing three rooms in the church geared towards helping those with special needs.

"There's going to be a therapy room, an education room and a sensory room," said Bobbi Weibel, preschool director at Redeemer Church.

The money will also be used to help fill the rooms with special equipment.

"There's a lot of stuff that's involved with sensory, a lot of visual stuff, iPads, just different things that have been found to be beneficial in helping kids that have Autism," said Servello.

"Kids will be able to play together, the parents will be able to meet each other and support each other and pray for each other and reach out to each other and as a church community we can reach out to people that are in the community and say you know what, 'We care, you're not alone. You're not alone with your child even though it feels like a really lonely place sometimes,'" said Weibel.

In this case, laughter really is the best medicine and Jim Breuer is happy to help.

"When there's a personal thing and you know exactly what's going on and what it's being used for and you can see hands on what's going on, I'm always willing to go out of the way for that," said Breuer.
