(WKTV) - SUNY IT students may soon be calling themselves SUNY PI students, as in polytechnic institute.
This will make it the only polytechnic school in the SUNY system, and the only public one in New York State.
The name change follows the recent merger between SUNY IT and Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. You could soon see the change on signs and T-shirts, but starting in 2015, it will mean students can take classes on either campus, which expands learning opportunities.
"In today's society, distance isn't the issue," said Robert Geer, vice president and chief operating officer of SUNY IT. "It's access -- especially electronic access -- so having the ability to take courses here and get experience at the facilities there, internship or classes, that's what counts."
The SUNY Board of Trustees will be voting on the name change in September.
