SUNYIT students officially begin academic year with 2010 convocation

By MIKE LaFAVE

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Not to be outdone by Utica College's convocation from Monday, SUNYIT welcomed new and transfer students to campus on Thursday.

The event formally begins the start of the academic year, with this year's theme being "A Call to Action."

The goal is to get students to look beyond excelling in the classroom and become active citizens. Executive Director of New York Campus Compact Dr. Laurie Worrall was the special speaker brought in to explain to students how book-work and community-work are directly related.

"There are all kinds of ways where students can take what they're learning in books and apply them to real world issues that make the learning more relevant, but also provide a pretty significant community benefit," Worral said.

Worrall says that in a down economy, it's more important than ever that students volunteer their services and become active members of the community.
