Search for military fugitive continues through second night

By LEXIE O'CONNOR

WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A manhunt continues Friday night for armed soldier Russell Marcum who escaped from military custody and fled through several counties Thursday night.

"No changes yet, we're still searching for him, of course it's nightfall so our techniques are going to change a little but we've got Forest Rangers, DEC, other departments helping out," says NYSP Trooper Jack Keller.

Officials also using infra-red helicopters to try and spot Marcum.

"You have a large area here, you have a lot of hunting camps, a lot of area that's open ground, wooded areas, a whole change of venue from normal to suburban areas, so we're going to be checking out a number of areas but a very large area," says Trooper Keller.

State police asking area residents to check and lock sheds or anything that is usually left open on their property where he could hide during the night. A cold night for someone hiding and searching.

"I hope they find him, I don't think these guys deserve being out all night looking for him," says West Winfield Resident Chad Rose.

"He is trained in these types of conditions but we also have our sort team, which is our version of a swat team and they're trained too, so we're confident that we'll be able to bring a peaceful resolution," says Trooper Keller.
