WEBB, N.Y. (WKTV) - The search for a man in possession of a rifle following a reported assault on Wednesday has been called off for the day.

A search got underway Wednesday afternoon in Herkimer County for a suspect that was reported to have been involved in an assault. Authorities said the man was believed to be armed with a long rifle and thought to be hiding in the woods near Moss Lake.

An initial search had been conducted Wednesday evening but called off, and resumed Thursday. That second day search had been called off as of 4:45 p.m. Thursday.

The man was described as a white male, six feet tall, with facial hair, and wearing a black t-shirt with a picture of a goose on the shoulder.

Authorities had set up roadblocks along Route 28 and were checking vehicles for the subject Wednesday evening.

Searches in the woods continued on Thursday with the assistance of Forest Rangers.

Calls placed for further information to Town of Webb police on Wednesday and Thursday had not been returned as of Thursday evening.
