Second hangar renovation at Griffiss Airport unveiled

By WKTV News

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida County officials announced the renovation of the second hangar at Griffiss Airport in Rome on Thursday.

The hangar that used to maintain B-52 aircraft is part of a $2.5 million renovation project and now boasts 28,000 square feet ready to hold new businesses.

Rome City Mayor James Brown said a key element the area can utilize with the new space is agriculture.

"We have the richest soil in the United States," Brown said. "So, we could grow it here, we could manufacture it here, we could package it here and we could ship it right from here to anywhere in the world."

The complete rehabilitation of all five hangars will increase the airport's ability to host commercial aeronautical businesses.

The first hangar to be renovated now holds MidAir USA, their new space allowing them to add 65 new jobs.
