Seminar reminds people to "call before you dig"
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - As Spring approaches, so does the construction season and Dig Safely New York is the state's call-before-you-dig service.
A seminar was held at SUNYIT to educate people on the dangers of excavation without research of the property. More than 250 excavators attended the event and they were reminded of New York's 8-1-1 hotline - a hotline to call before you dig.
Officials say an underground utility line is damaged every two minutes across the country.
"If somebody is digging and they don't call 8-1-1 to get the underground utility lines marked, they could cause severe accidents such as as digging into gas lines, from a catastrophic event to service interruption for cable TV or an other infrastructure like that," said Kevin Hopper of Dig Safely New York.
Officials encourage homeowners to call 8-1-1 before a construction project takes place on their property or before they do any digging themselves.
