Sheriff: Rome man injured after driving drunk, leading police on chase

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Rome man is facing DWI charges after he drove drunk, crashed his car and ran off on foot, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

45-year-old Kirk Carter, of Rome, drove off of Route 46 on Rome-New London Road in the city of Rome, striking several trees and a power pole, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.

The pole falling caused live power lines to fall on Carter's car.

Maciol said Carter exited out the passenger window and fled the scene on foot behind.

Deputies pursed Kirk on foot and he was taken into custody.

Carter was sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for head and leg injuries. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated returnable to City of Rome Court on a later date.

This accident caused Rome-New London Road to be closed for several hours.

National Grid responded to the scene due to the live power wires and spent several more hours restoring power to residents.
