ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A couple are facing charges after authorities say the woman tried to smuggle drugs to her boyfriend in the Oneida County Jail.

Authorities announced Tuesday that back in January, Oneida County Correction Officers found inmate Jacob Pope, 25, of Rome in possession of a quantity of methadone pills.

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, Pope's girlfriend, Carrie Kessler, 25, also of Rome, came to the facility to visit Pope and brought the methadone and was able to get the it into the visitation room where she gave them to Pope.

Pope, who is serving a sentence on an unrelated charge, was caught with the contraband upon exiting visitation, before he was taken back to his cell.

As a result of the investigation, the Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Unit charged Pope with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and charged Kessler with second-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Kessler was arraigned in the Town of Whitestown Court and remanded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility without bail.

Pope will appear in Whitestown Court at a later date.
