Sheriffs: Canastota teenager fell asleep at wheel

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Canastota teenager was sent to the hospital early Saturday morning after she was injured in a rollover accident on State Route 46 in the town of Verona, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, 19-year-old Brandi S. Carpenter, of Canastota, was driving south on State Route 46 when she fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the roadway.

Carpenter attempted to regain control of her vehicle and slid into a utility pole, causing the vehicle to overturn, according to authorities.

A transformer and wires from the utility pole came down onto the vehicle. Carpenter was trapped until National Grid responded to de-energize the power lines.

Carpenter was extricated from her vehicle and then sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for evaluation of upper leg and hip pain.
