Shrek the Musical gets ready to take the stage at Stanley Center for the Arts

By LEXIE O'CONNOR

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Shrek: the Musical will be performing at Utica's Stanley Theater on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night as part of their national tour.

The production has been touring since September 2011 and will continue traveling the country until April 2012.

To set up at the Stanley, the crew brought in four truck loads of props, including 25 different backdrops, rats on remote control cars, and even a spraying skunk to accompany their extensive wardrobe collection and "ogre-ly" masks.

"Nothing is small in this musical. Every department is large. Everything is brightly colored, and every song is right in your face," says Production Stage Manager Caroline Walker.

The musical tells the ogre Shrek's story of adventure, love and friendship, all set to rock and roll music, combining elements of the Shrek movie with Broadway-style music, as well as adding new jokes and songs to create a show for all ages.

"You have (the character) Farquaad, that has jokes that appeal more to the older audience, and then you have the lovable Shrek and Fiona, which every kid loves," says Walker. "And then you have the fart sequence, which everyone can relate to, where there are farts and burps and it's absolutely hilarious."

Shrek the Musical starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Stanley.

To get tickets for any of the shows, call the Stanley Box Office at 315-724-4000.
