(WKTV) - Back in October, Herkimer County designated itself a Purple Heart County.
And on Monday, sings that tout that designation were unveiled before the Herkimer County Legislature.
But local veterans say they honor all those who've served our country. And they hope citizens of all ages will see the signs and learn about the gratitude behind them.
"It's just a beautiful Purple Heart sign that's going to grab everyone's attention," said Joe Fraccola, of the Military Order of the Purple Heart." "We're hoping when it does and there's children in the car passing by one of those signs, for educational purposes, they're going to ask the question, 'What's that all about?'
"And then the families and the parents will have the opportunity to tell their children just what it's all about."
A total of 30 signs that proclaim Herkimer County a Purple Heart County will be placed throughout the county.
