Sixteen graduate from Utica Fire Academy

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Sixteen graduates of the Utica Fire Academy have proved they are tough enough to join the brotherhood of firefighters.

The graduates took the stage at Mohawk Valley Community College on Wednesday to receive their badges after 14 weeks of training that included physical, academic and emotional test.

Last week, the group was tested in live fire conditions. All proved they can handle the pressure and are now ready to join local fire departments.

"Utica Fire Department is a lean department," said Chief Russell Brooks of the Utica Fire Department. "With this graduating class, we'll have six more individuals that will be on duty."

The other 10 graduates will join departments in Beacon, Oneida, Oswego, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, Scotia and the Albany Airport Fire Department.
