HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A St. Johnsville man faces several charges after police say he drove erratically, collided with a motorcycle in the Village of Herkimer, fled the scene and then hid in a nearby lawn to evade police.

It happened at 6:45 pm on Saturday.

Police say William Windecker, 24, of St. Johnsville was operating a vehicle erratically on East State Street in Herkimer, passing traffic in a no-passing zone, and driving at an unreasonable rate of speed.

When he turned from East State Street onto Protection Ave, he collided with a motorcycle heading east on East State Street.

50-year-old Robert Whittaker of Ilion was the motorcyclist injured in the crash. He was treated by Herkimer Firefighters for minor injuries.

Police say Windecker continued down Protection Ave, without concern for the injured motorcyclist, who was down in the intersection.

An officer followed Windecker to a residence on King Street, where he had hidden in the lawn.

The officer struggled with Windecker, then took him into custody.

Windecker is charged with Fail to Signal Turns, Fail to Yield Right of Way, Fail to Use Designated Lane, Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, Unsafe Passing, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Reckless Driving, Open Container of Alcohol, DWI and DWI greater than .08%.

He was arraigned in front of Village Justice Michael Petucci and sent to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,500 cash and $7,500 bond.
