State Forest Rangers to investigate Schuyler Forest Fire

SCHUYLER, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Forest Rangers will investigate a forest fire at the Steuben State Forest that broke out Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials say the fire is initially listed as suspicious, because of garbage and re-arranged logs that seemed to be the source of the flames. Fire Captain John Scholl says this could indicate a bon fire from overnight.

The flames kindled around 3:30 on Caldwell Road, near the Herkimer town border.

The flames were extinguished quickly, but crews doused the fire with water for several hours so it would not rekindle.

Because the land is state-owned, State Forest Rangers will take over the investigation.
