State Police: Baby's death likely an accident

By ALLISON NORLIAN

DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) -  A family and a community mourn the loss of a 15-month old baby girl, after she is discovered dead inside her father's car on Wednesday.  State Police say the father left the child inside the car for hours outside at her grandparents home.  They say it appears the incident was an accident.

According to New York State Trooper Jack Keller, the father of the baby dropped off his three children at their grandparents house on Ransom Street around 8:00a.m., a daily routine for the family. Sometime after that, he went to his home around the corner and left for work in another car. It wasn't until 2:45p.m. that the baby was discovered by her grandfather.

"It appears at this time to be an accident," Trooper Keller said." You can imagine the family is devastated when they realized what had occurred and it was a tragedy overall."

Police gathered multiple items, such as the child's car seat in order to figure out what happened to the baby, considering it was not an unbearably hot day. The medical examiner will complete an autopsy on Thursday to determine the cause of death.

The Herkimer County District Attorney, Jeff Carpenter, will determine if anyone was at fault.

In the meantime, the community mourns the loss of the baby girl.

Maude Thompson, a neighbor said the baby's family is wonderful.

"The dad is a good family man," Thompson said. "It seemed like they had quite a few kids and he seemed good with all of them. They were just adorable to watch."

Once the autopsy is completed, State Police say they will release the family's name.
