State approves three-school merger study in Herkimer County

By WKTV News

HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The plan to merge three Herkimer County School Districts is moving forward and the State Education Department likes what it sees.

The Department just approved the three district reorganization study for Herkimer, Mohawk and Ilion and community forums will begin in June.

As part of the proposal, taxes in Mohawk and Herkimer are expected to go down roughly $300 - $400. Ilion taxpayers will see rates similar to what they are now.

Under the plan students in pre-k through 4th grade would still go to a school in their home district. Remington Elementary in Ilion would close and those students would go to Barringer Road Elementary which is also located in Ilion.

An upper elementary school for 5th and 6th grade would be located in the current Mohawk High School building and the middle school of 7th and 8th grade would be located in the Herkimer High School building.

9th through 12th grade would be located at Ilion High School.

If the plan passes as is, it will be one district for the 2013-2014 school year.

The full study can be found online here.

Public Forums will be held:
