State trooper killed by passing car while making traffic stop

(WKTV) - A trooper based out of Troop C in Delaware County was killed Thursday afternoon while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 81, New York State Police said.

Christopher G. Skinner,  42, a 13-year veteran from Binghamton, was killed instantly.

According to authorities, Skinner was outside his marked New York State Police car around noon making a vehicle stop on I-81 north of Exit 6 -- between Chenango Bridge and Castle Creek in Broome County -- when he was struck by a passing vehicle.

Authorities say the driver continued for a short distance before stopping and running into the woods. The driver was taken into custody around 1 p.m.

Skinner had worked in Troops C, E and G and was assigned to the Traffic Incident Management Unit in June 2008.

He is survived by his mother, Sharyn; brother, Shawn; fiance, Surrena; and two children, 15-year-old Kyle and 12-year-old Erin.
