(WKTV) - A New York State Trooper who was struck by a tractor-trailer while making a traffic stop has died, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said.
Trooper David W. Cunniff, 35, was conducting a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway near Amsterdam after 8 p.m. Monday. A tractor-trailer was in the right lane and drove off the roadway, striking the trooper's car and a car he had pulled over.
At the time of the crash, Cunniff was in his patrol car with the emergency lights on. The impact forced the trooper's car off the right shoulder, partially ejecting him. Cunniff was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he died Tuesday afternoon.
Cunniff was a nine-year veteran of the New York State Police. He had worked in Troops B and G and was a member of the then-Executive Services Detail at the New York State Capitol.
He was assigned to Troop T in Fultonville in February 2009. He is from Duanesburg, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife, Amy and two sons, 6-year-old Caleb and 4-year-old Zachary.
