Stores see increase in Valentine's Day spending

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - According to the National Retail Federation, the average person will spend about $126 on their valentine this year, up 9% from last year.

Some local retail shops, like the Old Wicker Mill in New Hartford, have seen increased sales. Laura Misiaszek, owner of the shop, says she has noticed an influx of Valentine's Day shoppers beginning last Thursday and continuing throughout this past weekend. She believes the milder weather is a contributing factor to the increase in sales.

"It was cold enough to do some winter sports, but there really isn't enough snow out there, so people went shopping," said Misiaszek,

In fact, Misiaszek says the milder weather has contributed to a 15% sales increase overall at the Old Wicker Mill compared to this time last year.

Misiaszek expects Valentines Day gift sales to continue throughout the week.
