Grief counselors at Richfield Springs school after teacher dies in fire

RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Multiple fire crews were on the scene of a fatal structure fire in Richfield Springs, Saturday morning.

Officials confirmed that the sole occupant and resident of the house, Mary E. Weingates, 59, passed away in the fire.

Weingates was a teacher at Richfield Central Schools, and is being mourned by the entire district following her death.

At approximately 7 a.m., officials were called to the scene on Walnut Avenue, where a home had become engulfed in flames.

According to reports, the fire took a few hours to put out, and when our crew arrived on the scene at 9 a.m., smoke was still billowing out of the residence

Assisting the Richfield Springs Fire Department was West Winfield and Cedarville Fire, who were also on the scene putting out the blaze.

The cause of the blaze, as well as the cause of Weingates' death, is currently under investigation.
