Students get a chance to test drive surgical equipment

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Shop class at New Hartford High School was transformed Wednesday into an operating room -- complete with state-of-the-art surgical equipment.

Oneida Healthcare and New Hartford High School teamed up today to provide students and the public with a hands-on opportunity. The Da Vinci surgical robot allowed the students to perform surgery on inanimate objects.

The hope is that some of these teens may think about a future career in a real operating room.

"There's 3D imaging, so they actually feel like they're looking right inside the body," said Kristy Russ, a registered nurse with Oneida Healthcare.

The public can get the feel for the tools and see what it's like to be a surgeon, as the open house at New Hartford High School lasts until 8 p.m.
