Students participate in MVCC camps geared to their interests

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Area children headed back to the classroom a little early on Monday. And while they learned something, it was just for fun.

It's all part of Mohawk Valley Community College's Summer Career Camp. Students in grades K-12 select classes that spark their interests.

This year's theme is "Full Steam Ahead." There were 44 different classes to choose from, including a weather class with WKTV meteorologist Bill Kardas. Most of the courses focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

"We had some kids take a digital animation class last year, and now they are taking that class in college," said Lisa Phillipson, with College for Kids and Teens at MVCC. "It piques their interest, and gives them a spring board for something in the future."

One of Kardas' lessons on Monday focused on collecting data, and he showed the students how a rain gauge works.
