Students take a sledgehammer to bullying words

By WKTV News

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The student council at Oriskany High School held a "car smash" event on Friday afternoon, all in an effort to raise awareness about bullying.

Called "Bang out Bullying," the car was festooned with hurtful words that many bullies use to describe someone. For a small fee, people got the opportunity to swing a sledge hammer at the car, with all of the money going to the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley.

"It's been very successful," said Trevor O'Byan, a student at Oriskany. "Great turn out. Lots of students, tons of people from the community who came to support us. Great to see."

School officials said the students raised $410 from the event.
