Teacher accused of stealing student's necklace pleads guilty

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A teacher in the Utica City School District accused of stealing a necklace from a child has pleaded guilty.

Crystal DeRosa, 33, of Utica pleaded guilty in Oneida County Court on Wednesday to charges of petit larceny and endangering the welfare of a child.

A Special Education Teacher at Columbus Elementary School in Utica, DeRosa was arrested in February following that the Utica City School District referred to as "a lengthy investigation" involving the school district, Utica Police and the Oneida County District Attorney's Office.

It was alleged that DeRosa had stolen a gold chain from the neck of a five year old student at Columbus Elementary School in late October.

School officials say DeRosa had been suspended since the beginning of the year, but resigned Wedneday morning.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 22, 2013.
