By RACHEL MURPHY

NEW HARTFORD N.Y. (WKTV) -Two teens were involved in a rollover car accident on Mohawk Street, after police say the drivers were racing each other.

Leighton Nimey, 16, and Grant Romeo, 17, both of New Hartford lined up their cars on Higby Road then drove to Mohawk Street on Monday night, according to New Hartford Police.

At one point Romeo went to pass Nimey, then Nimey's car began sliding sideways across both lanes of traffic. Soon after, the car tumbled in and out of a ditch, and rolled over several more times before resting on its roof.

Nimey's car is completely destroyed. Both he and the passenger were transported to St. Luke's Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Nimey was ticketed for reckless driving, and unauthorized speed contest, both of which are misdemeanors. Romeo was issued a summons for multiple traffic infractions. Both drivers are scheduled to appear in New Hartford Town Court in October.
