"The Castle" torn down at the intersection of Hobart and Oneida Streets

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Demolition took place Monday on a historic building in Utica, often referred to by locals as Hobart Arms or "The Castle." It is located just off of Oneida Square at the corner of Hobart and Oneida Streets.

The demolition began late last week but it is not clear how soon it will be complete.

The building is being torn down and rebuilt as part of a "Housing Visions" project. Nine senior citizens units will be available when construction of the new building is complete.

The Landmarks Society of Greater Utica had the building on its endangered list for more than a decade, but was unable to land grant funding or other tax credits that would have made saving the building more likely.

Sources say that this building used to be an apartment for a number of years nearly 30 years ago.
