Thruway to lay off 234 workers statewide

By ANDREW DONOVAN

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New York State Thruway Authority will eliminate 234 positions statewide, a spokesperson confirms to NEWSChannel 2.

It is not clear how these job eliminations will specifically affect any local employees.

Thruway spokesman Dan Weiller says the layoffs of full-time workers will be in all regions, including potentially in Central New York and its many Thruway exits and rest areas.

The State Canal Corporation, which has an office in Downtown Utica, is part of the Thruway Authority.

Weiller says that the jobs to eliminated have been identified, but the people who are laid off will be based on civil service laws and seniority.

No toll increases of any type are planned. A significant toll increase for trucks was rejected last month, putting financial strain on the Thruway.

Officials say that the layoffs are expected to save $20 million.
