Times Square lit up with the help of workers from Herkimer County

By HILARY LANE

HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y.(WKTV) - The next time you are in Times Square in New York City, take a look up and you'll see two 14x33 LED American flags on either side of the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Station.

You might be surprised to learn that the people working on the flags are not from the Big Apple, but right in Herkimer County.

The construction project was a collaborative effort between roughly 30 people from Herkimer County. Some of those people are local veterans, while others are people with developmental disabilities involved with Herkimer ARC. Some others were employees of Fiberdyne, small business based in Frankfort that produces the LED lights.

The construction group lived and worked in New York City until the project was completed at the end of December.

One of the people working on the project was Marcus Irvine, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He says this opportunity not only gave him a job, but a sense of pride in our county.

"It was an immense opportunity," Irvine said. "I never dreamed that I would be doing something people would be seeing for years and years to come."

The project took about 90 days from start to finish to complete.
