Townsend is endorsed by current and former sheriff

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida County Sheriff Candidate David Townsend says that, by far, Tuesday morning's endorsement to his campaign is "the most important" he has received in his bid for sheriff.

In front of the building Townsend wants to work in, current Oneida County Sheriff Dan Middaugh and his predecessor Bill Hasenauer endorsed Townsend for Sheriff. Both men say they worked with Townsend when he was at the Sheriff's Department and both men say he is the only qualified candidate in the race.

"I have received endorsements from the New York State Federation of Police, from the Public Employees Federation, United Auto Workers, but to have the former sheriff and present sheriff come out and strongly endorse me for the office is by far the most important," Townsend said.

Townsend's opponent in the upcoming primary, Jim Masucci, says that it comes as no surprise to him that Townsend received the endorsement.

"It does play into my platform that that place (oneida County Sheriff's Office) needs a change," Masucci said. "And I feel 'here we go again.' You have one sitting sheriff and one former sheriff endorsing Dave Townsend. Where is the change there."

Masucci and Townsend will square off in a Republican primary September 14. That same day, Rob Maciol and Angela Gumbarevic will square off in a Democratic party primary for the position.
