Traffic stops can be dangerous for law enforcement

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - When law enforcement officials are conducting traffic stops, there is always a risk of danger.

And that was the case on Thursday, when Trooper Christopher Skinner was hit by a car along Interstate 81 near Binghamton. Police say it appears the drive intentionally hit Skinner.

State police locally say there are some things you just can't prepare for.

"Any traffic stop an officer makes is very dangerous, because there are so many variable that he can control -- and many he can't control," said Sgt. Richard Misterka of the New York State Police.

Misterka also reminds drivers of the Move Over Law, which was initiated in 2011. By law, drivers are supposed to slow down and move over when approaching an emergency vehicle.
