Trout Power Weekend kicks off at the West Canada Creek

WEST CANADA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Trout Power weekend is here! It kicked off Friday night with a gala at the Crystal Chandelier Restaurant in Middleville. The event is designed to shine a spotlight on the West Canada Creek.

It'll focus on the section that runs from Barneveld to Herkimer. It includes a catch and release fishing tournament and creel study- and will use social media to post real time results online. The founders hope to capture information about the health of the creek and fish within. "We're trying to make decisions based on data . People that fish the river say the river is great. Some say it's not as good as it used to be. Well it's hard to make decisions on that, so we're going to try this weekend and get some information and at least set a baseline in 2012 what we think, how the river is doing," said co-founder JP Ross.

Photographer, world renowned fly fisherman and co-owner of Catch Magazine, Brian O'Keefe made the trip to town from Oregon. He is impressed by what he has seen so far. "I think Trout Power and what they are doing is very interesting it has a huge amount of potential and I'm really glad to see such a good turnout here and that people are getting behind their efforts," said O'Keefe.

There are plenty of events throughout the day tomorrow in Barneveld, Russia, Newport and Poland. It even boasts a 28 mile long garage sale! Organizers hope it will become an annual event. You can find a complete list of what is happening at
