Two arrested in falsified accident claim

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - An Otsego County woman and Chenango County man have been arrested for staging an accident where insurance money was fraudulently collected, Thursday.

On July 20, 2012, Sue Anne Beckwith, 43, of Norwich, called 911 to report that she was involved in a motor vehicle accident on CR-18 in the Town of Pittsfield after she swerved to miss a deer.

A sheriff's deputy was dispatched and responded to the scene to investigate the accident.  Subsequently the Sheriff's Office received information that Beckwith might not have been operating the vehicle when the accident occurred.

Investigators opened a case and conducted interviews, upon which they determined that Beckwith asked David Wehrenberg, 22, of New Berlin, to crash her 2002 Dodge Caravan so she could file a fraudulent insurance claim to get out of her car payments.

Wehrenberg allegedly agreed to crash her vehicle on CR-18 in the Town of Pittsfield and did so on July 20th, when the accident was reported by Beckwith.

Beckwith subsequently filed a civilian accident report on August 1, 2012 with the NYS DMV stating that she was the operator of the vehicle when the accident occurred.

She also filed a fraudulent insurance claim and received over $4,100 for the damages to her vehicle.

Both Beckwith and Wehrenberg were arrested, Thursday, and charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy.

In addition, Beckwith was charged with offering a false instrument.

They were arraigned by Town of Milford Court and summoned to reappear in the Town of Pittsfield Court on Monday evening.

If convicted, Beckwith faces up to eleven years in prison and Wehrenberg faces up to seven years.
