(WKTV) - Two people were killed in an accident in the Town of Boonville on Tuesday, the Oneida County Sheriff's Office said.

Mitchell M. Mashaw, 20, of Port Leyden was driving a 2008 Honda motorcycle that collided with another vehicle, which was driven by Thomas A. Grower, 78, of Forestport. Both were killed in the accident.

According to authorities, witnesses saw a motorcycle driving at a high rate of speed on Route 12 on Tuesday. An Oneida County Sheriff's deputy was stationary on Route 12 and saw the motorcycle. He pulled out to stop the motorcycle, but did not see it. He continued driving down Route 12.

Several minutes later, as the deputy neared Route 28, he saw the motorcycle again. He activated his lights and siren, but the motorcycle sped away, passing several vehicles on both the left and right. The deputy then lost sight of the motorcycle again.

The deputy continued on Route 12 for another mile when he saw smoke from over a hill crest. As the deputy approached, he saw an accident involving the motorcycle and another vehicle. According to witnesses, upon impact, both vehicles caught fire. Passer-bys and the deputy tried to free the driver of the car, but were unsuccessful.

The investigation is continuing.
