UPD: Utica man charged with injuring 8-year-old son with samurai sword

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica man is accused of wielding a samurai sword and injuring his 8 year old son-- and another man. Utica Police say it happened Tuesday morning in the 700 block of Elizabeth Street.

Three children were getting ready for school around 8:20am and their mother's boyfriend was helping the 8 year old tie his shoes. When they opened the door to leave, police say the boy's father came running inside swinging a sword- aiming for the boyfriend. Police say he missed and hit his own child on top of the head, cutting him. The 8 year old was able to get away with the help of his siblings.

Police say 42-year-old Thar Kyi continued to swing at the mother's boyfriend- cutting him several times before fleeing the scene. When police arrived they recovered a sword outside the residence in the bushes. Kyi was tracked down in the Syracuse area and taken into custody with help from the U.S. Marshal's N.Y./N.J. Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Kyi is charged with:

- Assault 1st- B felony
- Assault 2nd- D felony
- Burglary 1st- B felony
- Criminal Contempt-misdemeanor
- Criminal Possession of a weapon-misdemeanor

There was an active order of protection against the suspect. Both victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
