Utica Police join new alert system program

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - In an effort to to keep the public up to date when things are happening in the city, the Utica Police Department has signed up for a new program called Nixle.

It's an alert system that will let users know when there are road closures, missing people, emergency situations and crime spikes.

You can be alerted in three different ways - you can check the website, or sign up for email or text alerts.

"A lot of them are missing person alerts or crime alerts," said Sgt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department. "If there is a particular crime that's occurring - a shooting, a homicide - for, probably frost, snow emergencies -things that the public needs to know about and they probably need to know about sooner than later."

You can start receiving the alerts by going to www.nixle.com and register, or text Utica's zipcode (13502) to "888777."
