UPD to appoint largest number of officers in history Thursday

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The Utica Police Department will appoint the largest number of officers in the department's history this week.

At least 20 officers will be appointed on Thursday. The reason the department can handle so many new officers is because it has a regional academy.

From this week on, it will be a whirlwind of training. The swearing in will take place Thursday, with academy starting in a week. The new recruits will get field training and learn the latest ins and outs of law enforcement.
"Our training updates every single academy," said Lt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department. "We've been doing it for a while, so they'll be trained on all the newest techniques and all the newest information that's out there in law enforcement."

Interviews and screenings are still taking place, so the number of new officers appointed Thursday could increase.
