United Auto Supply breaks ground at former Bossert site
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's been talked about, hoped for and worked toward by several Utica City Administrations, for more than a decade and now it's actually happening as the long-vacant Bossert site will be empty no more.
The CEO of United Auto Supply and city officials broke ground on the auto supplier's newest store, which will be at the former Bossert site on the North-South arterial.
The site was removed from the superfund list and declared remediated back in 2008.
The new store should be open within four months and employ 25 people-all local.
It's been a long time coming and Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri says it's only the beginning.
It took more than a decade to occupy the former Bossert site as as United Auto Supply gets ready to take over more than a third of the overgrown, grassy, lot within the next four months.
Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri calls it the start of a new era in the city.
"We have to start referring to it not as Bossert's any longer," Palmieri said. "This is United Auto Supply."
Palmieri says economic development is evident in all corners of the city. Local businessman Tom Clark bought the long-vacant Harza building. Bagg's Square is enjoying a resurgence, with the grand opening just the same day of the speakeasy Gerber's 1933 Tavern.
For a long time, Bossert was the dark, vacant cloud hanging over many city administrations. With a committed tenant about to start building there, that leaves the other big, underused prime spot as Harbor Point in north Utica. The mayor says residents won't have to wait much longer for concrete news on that front, either.
"I think by the end of this month, you'll find out exactly what the best use is for that," he said. "We'll go to the public with that."
Palmieri says the city will seek requests for proposals from specific developers for Harbor Point in the next several weeks.
