ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you'd like to help track storms in our area and become a weather watcher, now you can!
Steven Smith started tracking the weather after the blizzard of '66, using a weather gauge to measure snow, hail and rain. Now, he is the coordinator for an organization known as "CoCoRaHS" - Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network
The group measures precipitation, then report their findings to the National Weather Service. The information is used in climate studies, but that's not all.
"We report daily, even if there is no precipitation," Smith said. "Our data also goes to drinking water facilities to make sure they have enough water on hand, and if they don't in drought periods, we can identify that very quickly."
If you live in Oneida, Madison, or Herkimer County, you could be a weather watcher.
The National Weather Services in Albany and Binghamton are holding training in Oriskany next week.
You can sign up via
the National Weather Service website. For more information on
CoCoRaHS, you can visit their website, as well.
