Utica Council meets to discuss overriding property tax cap

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Wednesday evening, the Utica Common Council takes up a vote on whether or not to override the Governor's two percent property tax cap for the upcoming 2013-2014 budget for the city.

In order to override that two percent tax cap, a 2/3 vote by the council is needed.

Mayor Robert Palmieri unveiled his budget on Tuesday, which calls for 3.75 percent property tax hike. For the average home in Utica, assessed at roughly $50,000, that's an additional $42 a year. The budget contains no new layoffs for city employees, including the Utica Police and Fire Departments, but there are ten vacant positions that will not be re-filled within the codes, DPW and Parks Departments.
