Utica Fire Department battles two fires Thursday night

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Fire investigators in Utica were busy Thursday night, battling two fires that broke out in the city.

The fire on Morris Street started shortly after 6pm. Several people were calling 911 when they saw a building engulfed in flames. It turns out a garage was on fire and the flames quickly spread to a nearby structure- a neighboring garage.

Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks says when crews arrived they focused on keeping the fire from spreading to the nearby homes. They were able to do just that and knocked the fire down quickly. The fire marshall is on the scene tonight, trying to determine the cause.

Earlier Thursday, crews were called to Brookline Drive on the other side of the city, for a reported chimney fire. Chief Brooks says the fire was a challenge because the chimney was set very high on the home. The people who live at 24 Brookline Drive were able to make it out safely.
