Utica Police online presence increasing tips and arrests for Department

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's like having hundreds of additional eyes and ears on the payroll...except you don't have to pay them a dime.

The Utica Police Department went on Facebook in November and in the three months since then, robbery surveillance videos they've posted on the social media have seen thousands of 'hits,' and the department has made 11 arrests they can attribute to their new presence in the social media.

"I think if you look at it from our perspective, it's exceeded everything we could have ever expected out of it," says Public Information Officer, Sergeant Steve Hauck. "We've made, so far, about 11 arrests, located half a dozen witnesses on different incidents and reached out to people where we never thought we could before."

The department isn't only on Facebook, but Twitter and You Tube as well. "Fans" of UPD's Facebook page can simply click on a 'crime tips' tab in order to give information they might have regarding a certain crime.

PIO Hauck says he posts to the department's Facebook page several times a day, and checks it several times a day as well.
