Utica Roasting Company expands, launches new Price Chopper partnership

By DON SHIPMAN

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A local coffee business is expanding its reach as the Utica Roasting Company launches a new partnership with area Price Chopper supermarkets.

The buzz today isn't just from the caffeine as Frank Elias, the owner of the Utica Roasting Company in downtown Utica remains extra busy these days.

"In the past year or so, I've really focused a lot more of my attention on building the business," Elias said.

Elias started Utica Coffee seven years ago with a main focus on manufacturing coffee. While they still do that today, new attention has been put on the retail end of the business. Now, you can find Utica Coffee in five area Price Chopper stores.

"It should be looked at as an accomplishment from all of those other businesses that supported this," Elias said.

One of the most interesting things about the venture is that every component is local. Even the cabinetry at Utica Roasting Company is made in the city of Utica, as well as the metal bins and the business' signs.

"Going back to the example of these bins...the bins that we were looking at were sourced from China," Elias said. "Plastic, not eco-friendly. I had the option of sourcing locally, an eco-friendly product, of higher quality, all-American made and providing jobs here in downtown."

Elias says it's not just about the jobs as he is hoping the way his product is produced helps to give his customers their own sense of ownership in his business.

"Not only high quality, but fresh, roasted here locally with a brand that, I think, is synonymous with Utica, but also supports things that happen here the greater Utica area, Mohawk Valley," Elias said.

Several businesses played a role in helping the Utica Roasting Company expand, including Metalogix, IMG-Electomark, Falvo Manufacturing, PJ Green, Tomm Moll and Romanelli Communications.
