Utica School Board passes budget proposal

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Utica City School District has a budget for the 2011-2012 school year. The Utica School Board passed the proposal unanimously Monday night.

The budget totals $133,084,270 with a 1.98% increase in taxes. Right now it's unclear if there will be any layoffs in the district. Superintendent Jim Willis says there could be as many as 65 position cut, from administrators to teacher and assistants. Willis says the cuts would be in every department at every school. Willis says those layoffs could be avoided if the unions are able to make concessions. "Right now we're still negotiating with the unions for concessions and there will be layoffs if they are no concessions. We're working with them now and we'll see how that goes," said Willis.

The budget proposal will be voted on by tax payers on May 18th.
