Utica-area veteran honored with French Medal of Honor

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A Utica-area World War II veteran recently traveled to West Point to accept the French Medal of Honor, which is the equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded in the United States.

Charles J.P. Gallagher doesn't share his war stories, but his family wanted to make sure he got the recognition he deserves and sent us this clip from May 9. Honored that day by a French government official were 34 men.

Gallagher was nominated by the president of France for the honor, and the French government says the nation is eternally grateful for the soldiers who fought in the D-Day invasion.

To be eligible for the award, the men must have fought on French territory in four major wartime campaigns.
