Utica city-wide clean up to take place Saturday

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, 16 clean up crews will spread throughout Utica picking up litter in a City Wide Cleanup.

It's part of a nationwide Keep America Beautiful campaign and regional Clean and Green Initiative of The Genesis Group to get people cleaning up and taking pride in their community.

"This year we're designating the month of April all month long as Clean & Green month for the area," says Raymond Durso of The Genesis Group. "Groups have already been out, groups continue to come out.. last Saturday we had a really great turn out in Herkimer, tomorrow we will have Utica, I'll be involved in next weeks in Rome."

This year, Mayor Palmieri's Quality of Life campaign deciding to tie in with the national and regional efforts focusing not just on a few neighborhoods but the whole city.

"In the past it's been individual neighborhoods that have focused on their own common area, now what we're doing is we're spreading out throughout the whole city and getting people in multiple neighborhoods all working at the same time in the same effort," says organizer Gene Allen of Utica's Department of Urban & Economic Development.

The cleanup effort already has 16 groups signed up for tomorrow and expects close to 200 volunteers. Their focus not picking up large bulk items but simply trash and litter that's either left there or has blown around.

"Let's pick up the lots, the tree lines, places along those areas,"says Allen. "So hopefully we'll see a major impact throughout the city and maintain it."

Group leaders will meet Saturday at 9 am at City Hall with bags and gloves for anyone who would like to help out.

Organizers say the City Wide Cleanup will go on if there is a light drizzle. If there is a downpour they will postpone it until Saturday April, 28th.
